As being new to owning chickens we wernt sure if they would come back after being let out, and the first time we tried it, it didnt turn out well. It resulted in me running around the property chasing after these birds with toes like velociraptors ( I may be exaggerating on that ). But after a good hour or so I maged to corral them back in the coop.
We then found out chickens need time to grow used to theyre new home, so we gave it a few weeks and then crossed our fingers. Now, we really couldnt wait the full two weeks, we dont like animals being locked up, so, it was decided, enough is enough, if they fly off they fly off, it will be a $40 lesson.
Luckily, now that weve added a few more animals, everything seems to have changed. When the chickens were let out today, they didnt immediately run off, they stayed to watch what the ducks were up to. After that, they started to act like chickens, rustling through the leaves and dirt looking for bugs, climbing up trees and looking for places to lay a nest.
The golden laced polish chickens just happen to be one of my favourite breeds, The colour pattern on them is brilliant, with theyre boisterous hairdo resembling something of a mix between Einstein and don king. One thing to keep in mind, while they are an attractively showy bird, of coat and hairstyle, they are in no need of specialized care, in fact, they are an extremely hearty variety of chicken, putting up with frigged Canadian winters and our boiling heatwave like summers.
They enjoy scraps from the table, red wiggler worms from our compost, oats, sunflower seeds, cantaloupe, apples, kiwi, sprouts, and many other fresh foods.
Here is our rooster, youd think it would be annoying having a rooster right out back in your yard but honestly, I dont even notice. It also adds to the ambiance of a farm, with the goats mehing, and the ducks squakings, it only makes sense to have a roster crowing, after all, it is only just a few times in the morning, he doesnt seem to do much during the day. This might all change, depending on if we add more birds ( competition ) to the mix.
Muscovys and chickens getting along
He seems to like this corner, its close to the coop door but far enough in the bush that he can feel like a real chicken.
While driving back from the Petroglyph park in Peterborough I noticed this place along Highway 7, WOW... Its a re-creation of an old Main St complete with jail, saloon, barber, undertaker, fort, and a cannon!

I also have a mission to change over every pot and pan, including pizza pan, roaster and muffin tins to cast iron. I dont care about the weight and Im tired of finding out about all these crazy chemicals and heavy metals in the new stuff. I was using an oven roasting pan until I found out it leaches out aluminum. While there will be no noticeable effect now, Im sure if I continued on, at some point in my later years I could develop dementia or Alzheimers, > accumulation< so I err on the side of caution in this case.

What a Halloween experience! While haunted houses are a certain kind of fun, this festival gives you the opportunity to embrace Halloween in a much calmer relaxed fashion. An orange glimmer from the pumpkins creates an electroluminescent like feel, wrapping you in a warm glow of extremely creative and talented works of art. The drive to Upper Canada Village is quite easy, with signage spread along highway 401 and throughout the towns. A few things to remember on your trip.
1. A flash light If you want to see the fish, which are monstrous! you will need a flash light or camera with good flash, I took both my Iphone and my Canon slr, the Iphone just couldnt get the job done.
2. Make sure to clear your memory card on your camera. There is A LOT of neat displays here, 100 pics of free space is just to little if you ask me.
To begin our journey click on the video below to add some Halloween themed music.

Having pumpkins carved into such dramatic pieces of art affixed over top of water is magical.

While I love all animals, the loon is one of my favorites. When I think of wilderness in Canada, the loon and its call go hand in hand.

Its seemed to be one of those events where it just kept going, which in this case made it all the more worth it/amazing. So often you pay for something and are left wanting more at the end. This was one of those great occasions where you kept asking yourself around every corner,
"Holy jeez, theres more?"
I spent around 2 hours here, lol. Yes, a lot of that time was because of taking photos, but if I think about it, with no photos and just walking around, it would probably be a good hour+. Definitely worth the money in my opinion.

Your waiter for the evening. In all seriousness tho, they do have some type of restaurant available ( only heard about it, never went in), along with a few hot chocolate/snack shacks and a main store selling everything from ground flour to witch brooms and old time memorabilia. I must say, the store is beautiful, nice and bright, full of machines from yesteryear and lots of neat things.
