AQUAPONICS FROM AROUND THE WORLD

How to: Start Small Scale Aquaponics, Part 1

I recently added a vegetable grow bed to my existing fish and water lily pond.  Good, healthy bacteria grow within a balanced fish pond in order to help break down fish waste.  This bacteria is important to the entire aquaponics system.
If you are starting a new pond or system, add “pond starter” to help boost the bacteria population. It is a good idea to add more bacteria every few weeks

Long Island City lab on cutting edge of urban farming with aquaponic system

LOFT LIC to set up water-based growing systems on rooftops and lots

Christie Farriella for New York Daily News

Rael Clarke works in his aquaponics lab in Long Island City where he grows heirloom vegetables and tilapia using a water-based system.

A former Abercrombie & Fitch model has become a pioneering urban farmer without trading in his preppy clothes for overalls.
Rael Clarke, the 24-year-old owner of LOFT LIC, transformed a Long Island City office into a laboratory where organic vegetables and fish are grown using an eco-friendly aquaponics system.
Clarke plans to turn the system into a business that sets up the water and space-saving designs on rooftops and vacant lots across

Aquaponics Systems – Ship it!

“When you ship things change.  Your project interacts with the world and the market changes.  You change.  There is a mark in the calendar – there were days before you shipped and then there are the days after you shipped”
Seth Godin, “Ship It”
Aquaponics System on the truckAnyone who has ever read much of Seth Godin’s work knows that he uses the term “ship it” in a unique way.  In Seth’s world shipping means that you have stopped planning, testing, evaluating and primping, and you are now officially taking action.  Once a product is shipped it leaves your control and is “out there” for critique.  “Ship it” in this sense can be both scary and exhilarating, but it is an inevitable milestone in a product’s success.
This past week we shipped our first two customer-ordered large AquaBundance Modular aquaponics systems.  Doing so was the culmination of about a year of hard work.  For this week’s blog post, I thought you might find it interesting to read just a bit about what we did to prepare and launch our Modular aquaponics system.

Aquaponics in Vietnam

Aquaponics reduces water consumption, yields quality produce, and provides healthy protein for communities.
Communities along the Mekong Delta do not have high incomes to afford protein and grow rice with polluted water from the delta. To feed their families a nutritious meal without using their reserved rain water, and creating a business to increase their income, aquaponics is the solution to go.

You would probably need to make a raft and contain the seed in little net pots with some media like gravel or clay balls or something similar.
You might need to run some water tests to see if your pond has enough left over nutrients to....

Sahib Aquaponics Farm Tour Feb 2012

The February Free Farm Tour was the first opportunity for Central Florida members of IDEAS For Us to come and discover the wonderful world of Aquaponics. We certainly had a full house. We had over 60 visitors, 50 of them via IDEAS For Us. We had to arrange 4 tours, starting at 10.00am and lasting well past 4.00pm. A very busy day!
You should have seen the starry glaze in the eyes of all who attended. Was this really true? A sustainable urban food jungle in waste space! We felt so good that we could capture their imagination and open up a whole new world for them

Citrus from seed ☔☔☔☔ ☼☼☼☼ ⚘⚘⚘⚘⚘

Indian sweet lime + palestine sweet lime + sweet citrus

Today We bring you our collection of citrus started from seed, We have recently decided to take the gamble as we could not find these varieties available in bud or tree form,
( at least in canada that is ).
While we dont expect fruit for many years, we are more interested in searching for something unique/odd, however much of a long shot that might be.
We decided to search of all places... EBAY! The only issue was,  you never know if what your getting is the real thing, and heck, you never know if your getting that thing at all ( we were robbed 50 some odd dollars and this was through paypal of all things )
This could all be chalked up to some crazy mix up with paypal, of which we will never know, but alas, it ruined the trust we had and no longer felt safe ordering from this supplier, its a shame too as they had other citrus seeds we wanted to purchase. Besides this unfortunate event we found many interesting varieties that made it through shipping and propagation, everything from red fleshed mikan oranges to red finger limes and giant etrogs + Indian sweet limes,  which we will discuss below.

The palestine sweet lime or indian sweet lime ( pic above ) was another easy citrus from seed, along with its high tolerance of salinity, drought, and concentrated foliar blends, its seems to be able to take anything we through at it. It has been getting fair sun but currently resides under the canopy of our moro blood orange tree. We are presently on a mission to acquire as many of the sweet limes and lemons as we can, as we find there taste absolutely dynamic, the sambo lemon being one of our favorites.

Red Finger lime (australiasica sanguinea )
Our finger limes that grew from seed are really taking off, what really plays with our head is that We hear of people in the states whos plants grow an inch in a year, while ours grew 10+ inches in 1 growing season, in Canada!, keep in mind its in a greenhouse at 20c+ year-round. With growing these from seed in all honesty were hoping for mutation/variation,
Like Maria Anne Smith, (original cultivator of the granny smith apple), were rolling the dice  .....??
come on sweetheart daddy needs a new pair of genetics!
Giant etrog
Here we have our giant etrogs, while these will not grow true from seed, we wanted a traditional celebration etrog, no collection is complete with out it
( and there are many to choose ).
While we are not jewish, we tried to stick within all the boundaries  involved, ( why not right, when in rome Israel! ) We ended up ordering again off ebay becuase we stumbled across the most perfect link, this seller had a good rep, good feedback, and to add authentic flavour, they came from Israel!, even claim to be kosher non transgenic seeds. Can we get more authentic then that?, other then picking a seed from a rabis hand this is pretty good. These trees have been the fastest growers of all the ones started from seed, and the most adaptable ( not to mention the most viable from seed ) the salty fish water that caused an issue with the mikan oranges seemed to only spur on vegetation with the etrog, ( go figure, tilapia water working with an etrog, next youll hear us say Egyptian sand boosts citron production, lol who knows... lets try! )  We have also noticed that during experimental foliar applications they did not burn when others did.

This seller can be found at the following link - http://myworld.ebay.ca/jerushop
Etrog + citron

I will provide progress reports on health, fertilizer applications, pests, disease ( if any ), growth and hiccups of each variety listed

⚘Companion ❀ planting⚘ ϟ

WOW,  I just stumbled across a very comprehensive list of companion planting ideas and I In no way intend to fill the internet up with more junk or steal someone elses hard work, so all I am doing in this post is linking to there site, ENJOY!.

http://www.ghorganics.com/page2.html

We personally practice companion planting here at Simpson Eco farms, and while sometimes we get the opposite reaction of whats suppose to happen, there are some that work flawlessly, We grow mint around our haskap ( blue honeysuckle ), basil, dill, and rue with our tomatoes/peppers/tomatillos/ground cherries,  pansies and johnny jump ups around lettuce, hot peppers under our citrus, as well as peppermint and mint rose geranium.
This year we will be experimenting with our fruit trees to see what we notice, We will update how its going in the future and let everyone know of our results.

Will? post ? some ? pics ? when ? it ? stops ?raining ???????????

Dragon fruits from seed ☐☐☐☐°°°°°°❚ ❚ ❚ ❚°°°°°°☐☐☐☐

Purple dragon fruit from seed
Here is a collection of our dragon fruits from seed, they seem to be growing at a reasonable pace, with the white dragon fruit under a fluorescent bulb growing the quickest. While I find the dragon fruit delicious, the white one is not my favorite, very little sweet taste, almost bland ( Im sure fresh off the plant comes into play but only so far when in comparison to other dragon fruits )  and to be honest,
I havent even tried the purple/pink ones yet, but I tell ya, it will be hard to beat the yellow dragon fruit.
The yellow pitaya is so sweet, I find the taste similar to a table grape but 10x the punch, the seeds are an interesting addition, they have a little more crunch then kiwi seeds do.

We had to make multiple orders online as only a few varieties sprouted ( there were no specific variety names, just white dragon fruit, purple dragon fruit and the yellow one I bought from the store ).
We went through one supplier in Hawaii and nothing sprouted at all, I found it to be very suspicious as all my other seed packs sprouted quite easily, so after some researching We came across a post where someone said they irradiate most products coming out of Hawaii, We cant confirm this yet but be advised, Hawaii is already known for there GMO invaded island,  most people We know avoid food from there as its the playground for genetically engineered crops,
not to say We here in Canada arent screwing around with this as well.

With the way this world is headed on GMOs, We figure its just a mater of time before they go after dragon fruits, so weve been in a scramble to collect all the species we can, in the hopes of preserving some original genetic material for future generations.

Apple rust ◊ and colloidal silver gold ◊

We just noticed rust on our apple tree the other day, since weve heard of using colloidal products as a form of disease control we decided to give it a shot, so far it does not look like its working, but sometimes in life, it gets worse before it gets better. The one issue I was not happy with was how a local ant colony seemed to be feeding off these rust lesions, I tried (orange guard) which was suppose to work on ants + the aphids they were hoarding, it did not work. I tried hot pepper spray, they went away and then came back in ten fold. Frustrated, I tried many different ways until I came up with an idea to try a product I had all but given up on ( at least for bug prevention )
Diatomaceous earth - I figured I had enough lying around I would give it a shot, as soon as I dusted the tree I could see the exodus. By the next day it was empty of ants and only a few aphids remained. By the third day, I noticed a few determined ants had somehow made there way to the very top where the Dia earth had mostly dispersed from wind gusts. There determination is impressive to say the least, but necessary intervention is paramount in order to save the health of the tree and the production of its fruit. I grow many other plants for them to gorge on, so they should have plenty of options for dining, just not on the fruit trees.
